Volunteer Activities

The Rainland Fly Casters club conducts local volunteer activities including teaching fly fishing, tying, and casting to local school students and assists with local restoration and fisheries projects.

Check out our most recent volunteer day with the North Coast Watershed Association

The North Coast Watershed Association recently completed a project in the Big Creek Watershed that included putting in a new bridge as well as putting large logs into the river to help reshape the floodplain and create habitat for juvenile salmon. Our club recently had a volunteer day with the North Coast Watershed Association helping to replant parts of the floodplain with cedar, as well as other conifers and shrubs to help stabilize the soil and ensure future trees can fall back into the system. We also helped hand seed around the base of the newly constructed bridge with various plants like slough sedge and western ninebark to prevent the growth of grass and weeds. This project aims to improve the overall watershed health and contribute to the long-term ecological cycle of the area. We appreciate the North Coast Watershed Association for giving us the opportunity to give back to the waters that we love to fish and recreate on. Opportunities to help out:

Club members are participating in the annual Upper Deschutes Watershed Council river cleanup. This event takes place on April 25th and involves hundreds of volunteers removing trash and invasive weeds at sites like Farewell Bend Park, Riverbend Park, and Tumalo State Park. At this event members will not only be participating in the cleanup activities but will have some opportunities to fish the Deschutes as well. Please contact Matt Beechan or Tom Flanagan for more information.
